4827 - Monte Carlo to LisbonMonte Carlo, on one of the best stretches of the Mediterranean, is one of the most sought-after addresses in the world. Discover its Belle Époque by heading to the town’s great 1864 landmark Hôtel de Paris—still a veritable crossroads of the buffed and befurred Euro-gentry— enjoy a grand bouffe at its famous Louis XV restaurant,  attend the opera, visit the ballrooms of the casino to conjure up Monaco’s elegant past.

With a history of almost 1,000 years Cannes, a resort town on the French Riviera, is famed for its international film festival. Its Boulevard de la Croisette, curving along the coast, is lined with sandy beaches, upmarket boutiques and palatial hotels. It’s also home to the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès, a modern building complete with red carpet and Allée des Étoiles – Cannes’ walk of fame. Pampered with an appealing year-round climate it is  one of the original and most popular resorts in Europe.

The infinite variety of street life, the nooks and crannies of the medieval Barri Gòtic, the ceramic tile and stained glass of Art Nouveau facades, the art and music, the throb of street life, the food (ah, the food!)—one way or another, Barcelona will find a way to get your full attention. The capital of Catalonia and the gateway to the Priorat Wine region is a banquet for the senses with a beguiling mix of ancient and modern architecture, tempting enotecas, shops, markets & sun-drenched beaches.

If you look north of the cathedral (La Seu, or the seat of the bishopric, to Mallorcans) on a map of the city of Palma, you can see around the Plaça Santa Eulàlia a jumble of tiny streets that made up the earliest settlement. Farther out, a ring of wide boulevards traces the fortifications built by the Moors to defend the larger city that emerged by the 12th century. The zigzags mark the bastions that jutted out at regular intervals.

Cartagena’s Old Town is steeped in history and bustling with life. The Roman ruins here are among some of the best in the country and Cartagena’s tapas are justly famed. Holy Week processions are as moving as those in Seville and Málaga.

Malaga has rapidly emerged as the province’s city of culture with its so-called ‘mile of art’ being compared to Madrid, and its dynamism and fine dining to Barcelona. In its center and eastern suburbs, this city of about 550,000 people is a pleasant port, with ancient streets and lovely villas amid exotic foliage.

With the Atlantic Ocean on three sides, Cádiz is a bustling town that’s been shaped by a variety of cultures, and has the varied architecture to prove it. Founded as Gadir by Phoenician traders in 1100 BC, Cádiz claims to be the oldest continuously inhabited city in the Western world. Hannibal lived in Cádiz for a time, Julius Caesar first held public office here, and Columbus set out from here on his second voyage, after which the city became the home base of the Spanish fleet.

Portimão is a major fishing port, and significant investment has been poured into transforming it into an attractive cruise port as well. The city itself is spacious and has several good shopping streets—though sadly many of the more traditional retailers have closed in the wake of the global economic crisis. There is also a lovely riverside area that just begs to be strolled (lots of the coastal cruises depart from here). Don’t leave without stopping for an alfresco lunch at the Doca da Sardinha (“sardine dock”) between the old bridge and the railway bridge.

Spread over a string of seven hills north of the Rio Tejo (Tagus River) estuary, Lisbon presents an intriguing variety of faces to those who negotiate its switchback streets. In the oldest neighborhoods, stepped alleys whose street pattern dates back to Moorish times are lined with pastel-color houses decked with laundry; here and there, miradouros (vantage points) afford spectacular river or city views. In the grand 18th-century center, calçada à portuguesa (black-and-white mosaic cobblestone) sidewalks border wide boulevards.

They also are vintners of Perinet winery in Spain’s Priorat region.

Joe Borelli

Joe Borelli, Alpha Omega Brand Ambassador

Joe Borelli is a Brand Ambassador for Alpha Omega, a boutique winery in the Rutherford Bench of Napa Valley. In 2018, he celebrates his sixth anniversary at the winery where he began as a Wine Club member. A love for fine wine lured Joe and Jill, his wife of 39 years, from Burlingame, Calif., to Napa Valley fulltime following his 30-year career as a teamster.

Hired personally by vintner Robin Baggett, who sensed potential in the former truck driver, Joe has exceeded all expectations. Über-popular with guests and often requested by regulars, Joe has made quite a name for himself in the tasting room at the 11-year-old winery because of his honesty and candor. He’s a natural with people, and it didn’t take long for this California native to turn his wine passion into a second profession. Joe and Jill enjoy traveling as much as they do sipping wine, and they try to do both as frequently as possible.
