Charming Cartagena is one of the most fascinating towns in South America. The old city, almost completely surrounded by lagoons, bays and the Caribbean Sea, is still girded by its 17th-century fortifications. Once these guarded the gold and treasures of the New World; now they shelter ornate churches, the dramatic Palace of the Inquisition,  and other  gems.

A rich history exists in Santa Marta, Colombia, South America’s oldest city. The beach resort of El Rodadero beckons from the south. From the north, the fishing village of Taganga invites a visit. The protected coastline of Parque Nacional Tayrona summons nature lovers to marvel at views of the world’s tallest coastal mountain range and glimpse the area’s wildlife.

Aruba is a long, narrow island, 15 miles from Venezuela’s coast, with a dry and sunny climate year-round. Its distinctive beauty lies in its stark contrasts. Next to arid deserts of wild rock formations, curiously bent divi-divi trees and cactus jungles, are magnificent beaches that shelve into transparent blue waters. Combining Dutch efficiency and Caribbean charm, Aruba has become one of the most popular playgrounds in the Caribbean, boasting sophisticated resorts and casinos.

St. Barts forms part of the French Overseas Region of Guadeloupe. Descendants of settlers from Brittany and Normandy operate its tiny inns, shops and restaurants. This charming, slow-paced island attracts tourists year-round to its shores. The graceful meadows surrounded by low stone fences, spectacular beaches, the small volcanic mountains and the quaint Creole-style villages are just several of the alluring aspects of this tranquil island.

In the past, Key West was the winter home of Ernest Hemingway, John James Audubon and President Truman. Today it is a stylish retreat for writers and artists. Its atmosphere is reminiscent of the Caribbean, yet it is the southernmost town of the continental United States. Take a stroll along Duval Street, from the Atlantic Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico, or explore its interesting art galleries and boutiques.

Originally a fort built by the U.S. Army in 1838, during the Second Seminole War, Ft. Lauderdale has little left of its warlike past. Instead the city welcomes visitors with broad beaches and an easy pace of life, plus convenient air and water connections that make the city a perfect place to begin or end a cruise.

Kevin Hague

Kevin Hague, Barnett Vineyards’ Director of Retail Sales
Kevin’s passion for wine and food was known at an early age when cooking became a hobby and when he or may not have sampled a great bottle of Meursault in junior high. Working in restaurants in nearly all capacities throughout high school and college culminated in experience with the Levy Restaurant Group in Chicago, which combined with travels in Europe, further elevated a love for cultivating experiences. After a multi-year detour in corporate marketing with a Fortune 500 tech company, a fortuitous meeting with Fiona and Hal Barnett at a charity dinner led to a return to hospitality working for Barnett Vineyards where Kevin has managed retail sales for nine years. He studied Literature and Philosophy at Miami University and his interests closely behind wine and people are music, more music, baseball, and education.

Barnett Vineyards

Picture1With passion and patience, Fiona and Hal Barnett created this vineyard and winery in 1983 with the intent of producing small amounts of hand crafted Cabernet Sauvignon wines from their estate. Since the first vintage of Barnett Vineyards, Spring Mountain has proven to deserve its own AVA and become known as a unique mesoclimate, producing exceptional Cabernet Sauvignons and Merlots.

The vineyards are located at the top of Spring Mountain, at elevation 2,000ft, and planted on steep terraces that follow the contour of the land. In some places, the grade averages in excess of 35%. Mountainside farming is very challenging. The vines must struggle to reach nutrients and water in the soil and, as a result, yield only one to two tons per acre. The elements of sun, temperature, and well-drained porous soils give an advantageous water stress to the vines and contribute to the depth, richness and character of the wines. Grapes are harvested by hand; vineyard row by row, as optimum ripeness and maturity is reached. Fermentation is done in small batches.

Since the winery’s first 100 cases in 1989, Barnett Vineyards has grown to approximately 6,000 cases in total production. Rattlesnake and Spring Mountain District Cabernet Sauvignons are the focus at the estate with total Cabernet production varying between 2,000 and 3,000 cases annually. In addition, Barnett Vineyards produces limited amounts of Merlot, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc sourced from single vineyards located in well-desired appellations.
