Photo of Monk Walking by the Angkor Wat Temple.Optional Angkor Wat Mid-Cruise 2-Night Overnight Land Excursion

Between the 9th and 13th centuries, Angkor was the capital of the Khmer empire, a colossal city renowned for its superb architecture and sculptures, vast lakes and temples. Hidden in the jungles of Cambodia until the late 19th century, it’s one of the world’s greatest wonders, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Silversea’s Mid-Voyage Land Adventure gives you an in-depth look at the Angkor Wat site that includes many structures still intact, including the grand Angkor temple.

Once the capital of the Khmer Empire from 800 AD to approximately 1200, Angkor spreads out over an area of about 40 miles (63 km). The city and its famous temples were abandoned in the early 15th century and remained unknown to the outside world until 1860, when a French botanist stumbled upon them in the jungle overgrowth. Today, travellers flock to Angkor to see this spectacular temple city, rated among the world’s premier architectural sites and since 1992 on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Experience the magical Angkor Temple City, acclaimed as being one of the most incredible ancient religious monuments in the World and Asia’s most famous archaeological attraction.

DAY ONE – Ho Chi Minh City / Siem Reap
Depart the ship after lunch and transfer to the airport for your afternoon flight to Siem Reap, gateway to the Angkor temple city.

Following Immigration formalities, a transfer coach will take you to the luxurious Sokha Angkor Resort Hotel in downtown Siem Reap. Following check-in, gather in the hotel’s restaurant for dinner.

Overnight accommodation at the Sokha Angkor Hotel – Siem Reap.

DAY TWO – Siem Reap
Following breakfast at the hotel, begin your exploration of Angkor Wat, the most famous of the Angkor sites and the largest Buddhist monument ever built. It spans an area of 500 acres (202 hectares), and is surrounded by a 660-foot-wide (201-meter-wide) moat. The construction required some 385,000 workers and 40,000 elephants over a 35-year period. The site remained covered by dense jungle growth until the late-19th century, when French archaeologists began a long restoration process. While some sections are still in ruins, others are used for worship and are occupied by Buddhist monks.

Entrance to this majestic and vast complex is via a long causeway across the moat. Then begin your exploration with a guided walking tour through corridors and courtyards. The walls are covered with bas-reliefs featuring battle scenes, dancing deities and visions of punishment in hell and rewards in paradise. The temple’s central building is three stories high and accessible via a steep staircase (only recommended for very fit and agile guests).

As the morning continues, visit the Angkor National Museum. Through interactive exhibits you will be able to gain a deeper understanding of tradition and different beliefs of the ancient empire. Statues, remnants from the great temples themselves as well as artifacts depict all manner of social customs throughout the evolution of the unique Khmer civilization. (Please note that photography is prohibited in some sections of the museum.)

After an extensive visit of approximately two hours, take a break and enjoy a buffet lunch at a nearby hotel.

Begin the afternoon at Angkor Thom, the former capital of the Khmer Empire. King Jayavarman VII established Angkor Thom in the late-12th century. It spans 3.5 square miles (90.65 square km), and features 25-foot-high (7.6-metres-high) gates at each of the cardinal points.

After entering via the narrow South Gate, continue to Angkor Thom’s most significant sites, including Bayon, a temple known for its 49 towers and a terrace full of colossal heads with smiling faces. The stunning architecture and unusual décor makes Bayon one of the most visited sites at Angkor Thom. Other highlights include the Terrace of Elephants and the Leper King, representing one of Angkor’s many mysteries.

At the end of your visit, proceed to Ta Phrom. The temple is reached via a footpath through the forest and your first glimpse is of an extraordinary sight. The invading jungle-like growth has been left in place. Serpentine trunks of towering fig trees wind around the temple ruins, across walls and through doorways, creating an incredible atmosphere. Ta Phrom is also featured in scenes of Angelina Jolie’s movie, Tomb Raider.

You will be transferred to Wat Thmei an active monastery where you can understand more about Cambodia’s tragic history since this now relatively built up area of town was formerly a site of killing fields in Siem Reap you will find a small memorial stupa which contains the skulls and bones of victims killed during the regime of the Khmer Rouge during 1975 – 1979.

Depart Wat Thmei and return to the hotel to freshen up. Dinner this evening is enhanced by a performance of Khmer entertainment. Depending on the number of guests at the Sokkha Hotel, the dinner/entertainment may be at a local club outside of the hotel and not within the hotel grounds.

Overnight at Sokha Angkor Resort Hotel – Siem Reap.

DAY THREE – Siem Reap / Bangkok
Following a very early breakfast and check out, you are transferred to the airport for a morning flight to Bangkok. Upon arrival there, and following Immigration formalities, a transfer coach will take you to the pier where you re-embark Silver Shadow

Please note: Passports must be valid for 6 months following the date of your entry into both Cambodia & Vietnam. Guests must have 2 blank pages for local visas. There is an extensive amount of walking and climbing steps required at all sites visited, making the tour unsuitable for guests with limited mobility or those utilising a wheelchair. A Cambodian visa is included and will be issued upon arrival at Siem Reap Airport. Guests will need to bring one passport photo with them. Lightweight clothing and comfortable shoes are recommended. Because it is still an active place of worship, proper dress is required for the visit to Angkor Wat: no sleeveless blouses or tight tops; skirts must cover knees and trousers must be full length. At some buildings, shoes have to be left at the entrance. The tour sequence may vary in the event of flight changes.

The Hong Kong Island skyline, with its ever-growing number of skyscrapers, speaks to ambition and money. Paris, London, even New York were centuries in the making, while Hong Kong’s towers, bright lights, and glitzy shopping emporia weren’t yet part of the urban scene when many of the young investment bankers who fuel one of the world’s leading financial centers were born. Commerce is concentrated in the glittering high-rises of Central, tucked between Victoria Harbor and forested peaks on Hong Kong Island’s north shore.

Hue (pronounced hway), bisected by the Perfume River and 13 km (8 mi) inland from the South China Sea, in the foothills of the Annamite Mountains (Truong Son Mountains), stands as a reminder of Vietnam’s imperial past. The seat of 13 Nguyen-dynasty emperors between 1802 and 1945, Hue was once Vietnam’s splendid Imperial City. Although it was devastated by the French in the 19th century and again by fighting between the Vietnamese Communists and the Americans in the 20th, the monument-speckled former capital has a war-ravaged beauty.

Romantically referred to by the French as the Pearl of the Orient, Ho Chi Minh City today is a super-charged city of sensory overload. Motorbikes zoom day and night along the wide boulevards, through the narrow back alleys and past vendors pushing handcarts hawking goods of all descriptions.

Bangkok, also known as the City of Angels and Venice of the East thrills with energy. There’s such a vast array of sightseeing, shopping, and eating possibilities that you’ll have little time to rest. When you do find a moment, pamper yourself with spa treatments, skyline-view bars, luxurious hotels, and excellent restaurants. The city is a mesmerizing blend of old and new, East and West, and dizzying contradictions. Temples and red-light districts, languid canals and permanent gridlock, streetside vendors and chic upscale eateries, all make their home together, all at the same time.

This is the most popular tourist destination on the Western Gulf coast, which isn’t surprising, considering Koh Samui’s gorgeous beaches, perfect weather, and sparkling blue, almost turquoise, water. Koh Samui has seen rapid development since the 1990s, and you’ll encounter hotels in all price ranges. Koh Samui is half the size of Phuket, so you could easily drive around it in a day. But Koh Samui is best appreciated by those who take a slower, more casual approach.

The main island of Singapore is shaped like a flattened diamond, 42 km (26 miles) east to west and 23 km (14 miles) north to south. Near the northern peak is the causeway leading to West Malaysia—Kuala Lumpur is less than four hours away by car. It is at the southern foot where you will find most of the city-state’s action, with its gleaming office towers, working docks, and futuristic “supertrees,” which are solar-powered and serve as vertical gardens.

Chef Kurt Grasing

Headshot (Current)Chef Kurt Grasing, Grasing’s Restaurant

Chef Grasing has worked in some of the finest restaurants in the world. His apprenticeship began at the Clift Hotel in San Francisco, after which he refined his craft at Narsai’s in Berkeley, first as a saucier and then as chef. Afterward he worked at the Pierre Hotel in New York as Executive Sous Chef. In the years that followed he was at the three-star La Gavroche in London and Four Seasons in Boston, then left to open 231 Ellsworth in San Mateo in 1986, which was soon considered one of the top restaurants in California.

In March of 1998 Kurt opened the door to his namesake restaurant: Grasing’s. In an impressive first year it received enthusiastic reviews and was voted Best New Restaurant and Best Chef by the readers of Adventures in Dining Magazine. Grasings has been featured in Bon Appétit Magazine’s Best of the Year issue in 2004, and was awarded Carmel Business Association’s Business of the Year award that same year. Carmel Magazine proclaimed Grasing’s the Critic’s Choice. Grasing’s was awarded Carmel Business Association’s Restaurant of the Year as well as a Celebrated Chef of the Year Award from the American Culinary Federation – Monterey Chapter, in 2007.  In 2013 Grasing’s was voted Best Restaurant in Carmel by the readers of the Monterey County Weekly. Carmel Pine Cone Readers Poll named Grasing’s the Best Restaurant for a Steak in 2014 and 2015.    Open Table diners conferred a 2015 Diner’s Choice Award on Grasing’s and Trip Advisor has given Grasing’s a Certificate of Excellence in 2015 and 2016.  2016 also brought Grasing’s a win for the Best Restaurant for a Special Occasion in 2016 from the Carmel Pine Cone Readers Poll.

2000 was the first year Grasing’s won a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence and received that award from 2000 through 2004.  In 2005 Grasing’s won it’s first Best of Award of Excellence and has won that double goblet every year through 2016.

In 2010, Kurt revamped Grasing’s by constructing a new bar and lounge along with completing a restaurant make-over. The warm hues and contemporary décor in the restaurant and bar gives Grasing’s an even more inviting atmosphere, giving it a new look with the same great food and first-rate service to which guests are accustomed.

Growing up in the Willamette Valley in Oregon, Kurt’s love of food began early, from buying raspberries bushes to grow and sell berries in the neighborhood, to cooking apples from the family tree in four different methods, Kurt has always gravitated to great tasting food.

One highlight of Chef Grasing’s career was to do a cooking show with Julia Child, an icon in American cooking history.  She was an inspiration to millions and helped shape Kurt’s lifelong love of food.  It was a once in a lifetime experience and one he will always treasure.

As a restaurant with an impressive contemporary menu, Grasing’s offers the finest coastal cuisine paired with a ‘Wine Spectator’ awarding winning wine list featuring the best California wines. For a true Carmel experience, enjoy dinner on the pet-friendly patio.
