Ports

For centuries, Dover has been a symbol of England’s royal fortitude. The port’s legendary White Cliffs have long been a welcomed landmark for seafaring travelers. The solid Dover Castle has faced invasions by Roman, French and even English troops. London’s legendary sights, including Westminster Abbey, Big Ben, Parliament Square, Whitehall and the fashionable West End, lie just 80 miles from historic Dover. Note: Arrival and departure times for this port will depend on tidal restrictions.

Fowey is a small town, civil parish and cargo port at the mouth of the River Fowey in south Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. The town has been in existence since before 1300; the estuary of the River Fowey forms a natural harbour which enabled the town to become an important trading centre. Privateers also made use of the sheltered harbourage. Fowey and its renowned beauty has been the inspiration for many authors, including Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch (‘Q’), Daphne du Maurier, Leo Walmsley and Kenneth Grahame.

The Irish capital, Dublin, enjoys one of the loveliest settings in Europe. Craggy Howth Head shelters the natural harbor at Dublin Bay and the gurgling River Liffey flows through the center of town. The ancient Egyptians, as well as Norman and Viking warriors, visited Dublin. However, the city’s most pervasive surviving influences come from the 18th and 19th centuries when elegant Georgian mansions were first built along the river and then outward from its shores. The arts also flourished during this period and Dublin served as the birthplace of some of our greatest literary figures such as Oscar Wilde, George Bernard Shaw and James Joyce to name only a few.

Liverpool grew to greatness via its docks and marketplaces  in the 18th century, as the riches of the Americas and the West Indies flowed through.  Of course, most people associate it as the home of the Beatles, something Liverpool doesn’t want anyone to forget. Enjoy the Town Hall, reminisce about the Beatles, explore the Walker Art Gallery, find the Strawberry fields, or the delights of the restored Albert Dock, with its classy shops and maritime museum.

A Viking kingdom more than a thousand years ago, Douglas is today the capital of the Isle of Man. The shopping high street, filled with some of Europe’s biggest retailers as well as local shops, leads to the magnificent sea-front lined with restaurants, theaters and museums. The Douglas Horse Trams also run along the harbor, transporting riders to a simpler time.

Merely a village in the 17th century, Belfast grew by leaps and bounds during the Industrial Revolution. The manufacture of linen and ships (Belfast has the world’s largest dry dock) brought not only prosperity to the city, but beauty. Ornate Victorian homes and grand Edwardian civic buildings line the streets. The city also has many quaint lanes populated by pubs and boutiques dressed with overflowing window boxes and brightly painted doors. While there is much to detain you in lovely Belfast, you might want to take the quick trip over the bay, to Carrickfergus Castle, the best-preserved Norman castle in Ireland.

Greenock, a former shipbuilding town on the River Clyde, is noted as the birthplace of James Watt, who perfected the steam engine; nearby Ayrshire is the  birthplace of Robert Burns, Scotland’s most famous poet. Marvel at the dramatic landscape surrounding Greenock, your gateway to fairy-tale castles, glistening lochs, verdant countryside and Glasgow. Wherever your interests lay, this port of call offers insight and inspiration to all who visit.

Remote and rugged, the Isle of Skye possesses a certain magic. Just saying the words, “Isle of Skye,— evokes a lyricism and romance that inspires a sigh of longing. Arrive in the pretty harbor lined by colorful buildings and either head straight out into the wild and wooly surroundings—by boat, foot or even pony—or stay in the snug town for an immersion in old-time charm.

With a population of only 8,000, the delightful town of  Stornoway is the capital of the Western Isles. Beautifully situated on the seafront, overlooking a magnificent harbor view, it is considered by many to be in one of the most picturesque in Scotland. The town’s friendly inhabitants are revered for their seafaring traditions and they enjoy a level of self-sufficiency that is normally only seen in larger towns on the mainland.

Sea Day. It’s your day to do as you please and enjoy a Lail event aboard ship! Pamper yourself at the Feng Shui-inspired Crystal Spa, work-out at the fitness center; make a movie with USC’s School of Cinematic Arts Digital Filmmaking class at the Creative Learning Institute ®; take in a lecture through the Crystal Visions® Enrichment Program; watch a movie, shop, or simply lounge poolside while an attentive crew caters to your every whim. From mat Pilates and yoga to PGA golf instruction and paddle tennis on full-size courts, today is all about you. As evening arrives, dine on the renowned culinary creations of Nobu Matsuhisa, and Crystal’s own acclaimed chefs with new Modern Cuisine and Global Inspired menus, enjoy special wine-makers dinners, breakout new production shows, intimate lounges, a pulsing dance club or the action-packed Crystal Casino.

Iceland is a land of volcanoes, hot springs, mountains, glaciers and northern lights. Reykjavik, on the coast, is the country’s capital and largest city. It’s home to the National and Saga museums, tracing Iceland’s Viking history. The striking concrete Hallgrimskirkja church and rotating Perlan glass dome offer sweeping views of the sea and nearby hills. Exemplifying the island’s volcanic activity is the geothermal Blue Lagoon spa, nearby in the village of Grindavik.

Robin Lail

People often throw around the words “living legend.” Robin Daniel Lail actually is one. Her quiet graciousness may show a healthy dose of Napa-sewn hospitality but it doesn’t immediately reveal the deep legend of her family’s legacy: as a modern, respected producer of fine wines; a protégée of Robert Mondavi; the co-founder of Merryvale Vineyards and Dominus Estate; and the great-grandniece of Gustave Niebaum, founder of the storied Inglenook. Robin and her husband, the renowned architectural designer Jon Lail, will host guests with days of incredible stories, celebratory sips along with the sumptuous bounty of the local land among the sigh-inducing vistas on this adventure.

Lail Vineyards

Robin Daniel Lail’s heritage began in 1879 with the founding of Inglenook Vineyards by her great -granduncle, the iconic Captain Gustave Niebaum.  By the early 1890s, this brilliant man’s obsession for achieving the pinnacle of excellence earned Inglenook wines the status of being considered by many as the finest produced in the country.

The determination to achieve excellence was carried forward through the decades following Niebaum’s death in 1908, with a crescendo in the thirty years following the repeal of Prohibition under the meticulous, passionate stewardship of John Daniel, Jr., Robin’s father.  The collection of Cabernets coming from his years of ownership is still celebrated today as some of the finest red wines on earth.

Although Inglenook was sold in 1964, the passion for winemaking did not fade.  Robin inherited her father’s respect for tradition.  Today her family honors his legacy with their relentless pursuit to produce wines second to none.
