Though it has only recently re-emerged as an independent nation, Croatia is by no means a new country. There were settlements along the Dalmatian Coast before recorded time. When Slavic people migrated here in the 6th century, they converted to Catholicism and adopted the local Latin alphabet. The region eventually became part of the powerful Kingdom of Croatia. Medieval Dubrovnik, formerly the Republic of Ragusa, was one of several walled cities established in the 7th century to guard the coastal approaches. Its fortification was completed in the 13th century and has remained relatively unchanged. The city walls are in excellent condition and today prevent invasion by automobiles. Within the walls, the lovely sleek lines of Venetian-style buildings complement a wealth of ancient stone architecture. Nearby islands feature beautiful beaches & ancient ruins.

Rising above the Adriatic Sea, the town of Kotor is splendid for both its ocean views and medieval Old Town. To walk through its streets is to take a stroll through history. You’ll see fortifications dating from the 9th century; the Church of Saint Ana dating from the 12th century; the Church of Saint Luke from the 13th century; the Church of the Healing Mother of God from the 15th century; the Prince’s Palace from the 17th century; and Napoleon’s Theatre from the 19th century. Stylish gates, enticing flights of stairs and inviting squares, all accessed via a maze of narrow lanes, make Kotor’s Old Town a true delight. With your visit, you will understand why Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Split was first settled when, at the end of the third century AD, the Roman Emperor Diocletian built his palace in the charming city. The importance of Diocletian’s Palace far transcends local significance because of its level of preservation and the buildings of succeeding historical periods found within its walls, which today form the very heart of old Split. The palace is one of the most famous and integral architectural and cultural constructs on the Croatian Adriatic coast. The seaport of Split lies on the Dalmation coast. It is the economic and administrative center of Middle Dalmatia, with about 200,000 inhabitants. Split’s growth became particularly rapid in the 7th century, when the inhabitants of the destroyed Greek and Roman metropolis Salonae took refuge within its walls. The lovely ruins of Solin, located outside the city, can still be explored today. Split has a long tradition of collecting and caring for monuments. This interest appeared as early as the Renaissance. Diocletian’s Palace, Mestrovic Gallery, the Archaeological Museum and the Temple of Jupiter are just a few of the impressive museums and galleries that shouldn’t be missed.

Zadar is blessed with beautiful natural surroundings. The city faces an Adriatic archipelago that is one of the best sailing areas in the world. With its mild winters and warm summer, Zadar offers inhabitants and visitors an excellent environment for work and leisure. Zadar is bordered by four national parks: the untouched Kornati Islands, the breathtaking Velebit mountains, the winding Krka River and the peaceful Plitvice Lakes. Other natural sites include the canyon of the river Zrmanja and the caves at Cerovac. These places are ideal for swimming, diving, boating, surfing, tracking, climbing and even skiing.

Located on the Kvarner Gulf at the foot of the mountains and surrounded by a rocky, picturesque coast, Opatija is known for its natural beauty. Excursions treat you to glimpses of forests dense with bay laurel, hilltops crowned by storybook towns and, of course, verdant hills and colorful buildings meeting the waters of the Adriatic. Here in this Venetian-influenced region, the cities are often as captivating as the countryside, and perhaps nowhere is this more true than in Opatija. A spell as a fashionable seaside resort for the Viennese elite and under the umbrella of the Habsburg Empire has infused the city with a regal elegance. Estates and pavilions turned museums and galleries make for a pleasant way to pass the time. To pass along the sparkling Adriatic, take a stroll on the promenade that runs along the waterfront.

Combine everything there is to love about the upper reaches of the Adriatic – mild weather, the sunny disposition of the locals, Venetian architecture, traditions in olive oil and wine – and you have Piran, unfailingly billed as one of Slovenia’s prettiest towns. In fact, Piran may just be one of the world’s prettiest towns, as you will surely conclude as you walk along its narrow, winding streets, step into the oval-shaped main square graced by stately buildings, and enjoy a beguiling mix of cultures, abetted by Piran’s location within a stone’s throw of Italy and Croatia and not far from Austria and Hungary. Situated on a narrow peninsula reaching out into the sea, this well-preserved historical town is easily explored by foot, an ideal way to be lured up to the bell tower of the Church of St. George to admire the views or into a homey restaurant for a seafood meal.

Venice rests three miles off the coast of mainland Italy and is considered one of the world’s most enchanting cities. Known as the “Queen of the Adriatic,” it actually comprises more than 100 separate islands. Laced together by a string of 400 intricate bridges, Venice is legendary for its labyrinthine network of canals. A whimsical stroll through the city can lead one to a hidden world of ornately decorated piazzas and shops. As you explore colorful marketplaces and busy town squares, marvel at a priceless legacy of Baroque architecture. Admire the richness of St. Mark’s Basilica and the lavishness of the Palazzo Ducale. Getting lost in Venice can be a truly delightful experience. The place of dreams, this romantic city will live long in your memory.

John Conover

JConover (1)About John Conover
Partner/General Manager of PlumpJack Estate Winery (Oakville), CADE Estate Winery (Howell Mountain), and Odette Estate Winery (Stags Leap)

John Conover joined PlumpJack Winery as general manager in January 1999 to oversee the daily operations of the estate winery and vineyard, provide strategic direction for the newly-established property, steadily increase production from 1,000 cases to 10,000 cases annually, and create the image, awareness and global distribution channels that would ultimately support that level of production.

The critical and fiscal success of PlumpJack Winery ultimately inspired the purchase of a new 54-acre property on Howell Mountain. CADE Winery, founded in 2005 by partners Conover, Gordon Getty and Gavin Newsom, is nestled against dramatic slopes at an elevation of 1800 feet. The grapes grow in soil characterized by mountain ash and minerals, and the temperatures provide the perfect conditions for ripening, producing grapes with balance and density.

From the outset of this new endeavor, the partners were committed to building CADE as the first Gold LEED-certified estate winery. “No one had ever attempted this, even the contractors, so the responsibility fell to us to develop a completely original plan,” says Conover. “We used everything from recycled concrete to insulation made from blue jeans. We incorporated solar panels to minimize the amount of electricity we use on the premises and utilized renewable cork flooring. We also made the commitment to be extremely careful with water use. Since it’s opening, CADE has served as a model for those seeking this level of green building, from UC Davis to other private winery ventures,” Conover concludes.

With CADE’s success mirroring that of PlumpJack’s, the three partners were open to a third winery when the opportunity to purchase an historic property in Stags Leap was presented in the fall of 2011.  Soon thereafter, in February 2012, they founded Odette Estate. Odette, which spans 45 acres and is currently in the late stages of development, will also be Gold LEED certified and farmed organically. The winery’s first vintage, a 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon, will be released in February 2015. Early critical reviews of this wine are hinting that Odette will follow in the footsteps of its celebrated siblings.

Of his partners, Conover says, “I’m exceedingly fortunate to have had the opportunity to develop these properties alongside Gordon Getty and Gavin Newsom. We share an absolute passion for these three properties, our wines and our people. This level of alignment can be very rare and it is the foundation of our success.”

Conover spends time at each winery each day. “Running wineries isn’t something one does remotely,” he says. “It’s an agricultural business and requires a feet in the soil approach to management. It’s also a very human business and that means spending time with the people who are the bedrock of our organization.

On the topic of what makes him eager to start each new day after 30 years in the wine business, Conover credits the team. “Not a day goes by that I do not acknowledge what an honor it is to work with our winemakers: Aaron Miller at PlumpJack, Danielle Cyrot at CADE and Jeff Owens at Odette. These are among the best, brightest and most passionate individuals in the business. Their talent and level of commitment to their craft and their teams make me proud beyond words.” And,” Conover concludes, “I think anyone who’s been to any of the three wineries would agree that our hospitality team provides experiences that are nothing short of magical.”

Conover lives in St. Helena with his wife, Ann Marie, having raised two daughters who are now in their twenties. He is currently serving on the Board of Directors of The Napa Valley Grape Growers.

About PlumpJack Estate Winery

PlumpJack Winery sits squarely in the heart of Napa Valley’s renowned Oakville region, surrounded by a 42-acre estate vineyard highly regarded for the quality of its Cabernet Sauvignon.

Gavin Newsom and Gordon Getty established PlumpJack Winery in 1995, inspired by one of Shakespeare’s most memorable characters, Sir John “PlumpJack” Falstaff. PlumpJack’s down-to-earth, fun-loving, irreverent nature is rivaled only by his fierce loyalty to Prince Hal (Henry V), with whom he shares more than a few goblets of sack (wine) at the local tavern. “If sack and sugar be a fault,” intones PlumpJack, “God help the wicked.” At PlumpJack Winery we appreciate this hearty fellow’s priorities. We pay allegiance to our world-class vineyard by crafting wines of the highest quality, and we celebrate the convivial spirit of our namesake with their inviting, approachable style. Even our tasting room encourages camaraderie, with doors wide open to long-time wine lovers and new enthusiasts alike.

PlumpJack Winery sits squarely in the heart of Napa Valley’s renowned Oakville region, surrounded by a 42-acre estate vineyard highly regarded for the quality of its Cabernet Sauvignon. Both our winery building and our vineyard date back to the 1800s, when winemaking pioneers first took advantage of a unique position on the valley floor. The east side of our vineyard lies along the foothills of the Vaca mountain range and yields grapes with the kind of bold fruit character that comes from well-draining hillside soils. To the west, our estate lies in the Napa River flood zone. Here our vines take root in rich, deep clay soils, for grapes with softer, more supple varietal character. From our oldest, rockiest section—the “I” Block where we source our Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve—to more recent plantings, we strive to maintain balanced vines. Thanks to the full, expressive range of our estate, PlumpJack wines have become known for their intriguing complexity.

From 1973 to 1995, proprietors James and Anne McWilliams brought our estate vineyard to prominence with the dynamic, long-lived wines of Villa Mt. Eden Winery. We’re proud to carry on their fine heritage with PlumpJack. Today, winemaker Aaron Miller and his team create the full-bodied, elegant wines that have earned PlumpJack high critical acclaim, including an Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Reserve Chardonnay, Napa Valley Syrah and Merlot. For each wine, Aaron selects methods that allow our vineyards to shine through. He monitors vines for peak ripeness, chooses fermentation in oak or stainless steel, and ages the wines in a variety of oak barrels from distinctive cooperages. Many of our bottlings—including half our Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve wines and half our Chardonnay—are topped with a screw-cap, a bold move that represents our commitment to quality as well as our spirit of approachability.

About CADE Estate Winery

CADE Estate Winery sits high above the fog line on the dramatic slopes of Howell Mountain, just northeast of the town of St. Helena. The building’s striking architecture, a dialogue between gentle contours and strong rectilinear forms, suggests the complexity of our wines– powerful yet nuanced expressions of our mountain terroir. The winery blends right in with the impressive contrasts of our estate, a spot where cultivated vineyard rows meet tall evergreens and native Manzanita trees, all set against a backdrop of staggering Napa Valley vistas for a visitor experience not soon forgotten.

In 2005, Gavin Newsom, Gordon Getty and John Conover established CADE Estate Winery to craft luxury, high-altitude estate Cabernet Sauvignon from Howell Mountain as a complement to the valley floor wines of PlumpJack Winery. Like PlumpJack, CADE takes its name from Shakespeare, who used the term to refer to the wine casks– or cades– shipped from Bordeaux to England during Elizabethan times.

At an elevation of 1800 feet, our estate– 54 contiguous acres surrounding the winery– experiences a unique temperature inversion. During the day, conditions are much cooler than those on the valley floor; evenings, on the other hand, grow warmer with the setting sun. This gives our grapes extended hangtime, allowing them to ripen fully and evenly for wines of exceptional density and balance. Our mountainside soils, characterized by volcanic ash and minerals, provide beneficial stress to vines that further concentrates the character of this unique terroir.

Former CADE winemaker (and current consultant) Anthony Biagi collaborated with architect Juan Carlos Fernandez to construct our state-of-the-art winemaking facility. Every detail of the winery, from the shape of the cellar to the natural insulation of the caves, supports winemaking that brings out the personality of our terroir. CADE wines articulate the intense, powerful character of our estate while maintaining a balance of fruit, acidity, and oak carried over a voluptuous mouthfeel. These are layered wines, with a complexity that allows them to age well alongside an approachability that makes them delightful to drink right now. In contrast to the rustic, tannic Cabernet Sauvignon wines sometimes associated with Howell Mountain, we like to call the nuanced, artisanal expression of our wines Modern Howell Mountain. We also craft a crisp, vibrant Sauvignon Blanc with an intriguing combination of stainless steel, oak, and cement egg fermentation.

At CADE Estate, we believe that winemaking should honor the land, both aesthetically and ecologically. Our estate’s artistic, contemporary design, with its inviting rooms and wide open terrace, encourages guests to discover the ever-changing interplay among natural and architectural spaces. The environmentally responsible construction of CADE includes solar panels, naturally regulated caves, reclaimed and recycled materials and much more. We are proud to be the first organically farmed LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold Certified estate winery in Napa Valley.

About Odette Estate Winery

Odette is a fabled princess… a mistress…a judge…a heroine. Odette is both of antiquity and modernity. You will find her in works of fiction and tales from history. Odette encapsulates our inspiration for this property – femininity, strength and power. Enchanté.

Tucked into the dramatic palisades of the Stags Leap District, sits Odette Estate on 45 voluptuous acres. As the newest addition to the beloved region, Odette looks to serve as a “breath of fresh air” to the historic District. Contemporary architecture and design, paired with a contemporary stance on environmental responsibility, Odette is symbolic of the future of Stags Leap.

With its two sister properties, PlumpJack and CADE (located in Oakville and Howell Mountain respectively), Odette rounds out the trio of wineries committed to producing full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignons that are notable for the combination of power and elegance, while simultaneously showcasing the unique properties of the AVA.
