TOR Post Cruise

We are currently putting together the details for the exclusive post-cruise program in Bordeaux with TOR Wines. To participate in this exclusive post-cruise program, reservations must be made through MmMmTravel.  The below is a preliminary itinerary only. All times, events and details will be finalized at a later date and details will be announced to MmMmTravel guests.

August 23, 2018: BORDEAUX Half Day Touring & Tasting
Disembark the beautiful AMADolce with your luggage to begin an exclusive post-cruise tour of Bordeaux with Tor & Susan Kenward of TOR Wines. Today we will explore the Smith Haut Lafite wine estate to focus on the notions of terroir and blending. If present, we will have the opportunity to meet Daniel & Florence Cathiard, the dynamic owners of Château Smith-Haut-Lafite Wine estate and dig into their cellar. Our curiosity and taste buds then beckon us to the château where we will learn more about winemaking and participate in a food and wine pairing lesson while enjoying a sit-down lunch in the classic French tradition!  At the end of lunch our driver will transfer us to our 5-star hotel. The afternoon is free to unpack, settle in, enjoy spa treatments and explore all that the Bordeaux region has to offer. Meet Tor and Susan this evening for a glass of wine.

August 24, 2018:  BORDEAUX Touring and Wine Tastings
9:15am: After breakfast at our hotel this morning we will embark on a special day dedicated to Bordeaux’s vineyards to experience the “best of” Bordeaux! In 2017, 22 wine estates received ‘Best Of Wine Tourism’ awards thanks to their architecture, gardens, or the originality of the visits they offer. Tor is reaching into his cellar-master list to determine which wine estates will impress you the most. On the right bank Saint-Emilion and Pomerol; on the left Margaux, Pauillac … Undertaken at the request of Napoléon III and unchanged since 1855, the famous 1855 classification of the wines of Bordeaux officially recognized 86 estates, and divided them into 5 categories (first, second, third, fourth and fifth growths). These are located in the Médoc, in Sauternes and Barsac and one in the Graves. Expect to savor two magnificent wineries different styles and tastes of the Bordeaux regions. Mid-day we will delight in lunch provided at the second estate. This unique day is an extraordinary opportunity to visit beautiful family-owned estates, meet their enthusiastic owners, and sample memorable wines of tradition alongside our favorite Napa Valley Winemaker! Early evening we will return to our hotel – the balance of the evening is yours to explore Bordeaux.  (B,L)

August 25, 2018:   BORDEAUX Airport Transfer
All too soon we bid farewell to the beautiful Bordeaux region. After breakfast at our hotel you will enjoy a  group transfer from the hotel to the Bordeaux–Mérignac Airport (BOD). Group transfer time will be dependent on average guest flight times. Private transfers available upon request for additional fee.

Summary of Bordeaux: Bordeaux, hub of the famed wine-growing region, is a port city on the Garonne River in southwestern France. It’s known for its Gothic Cathédrale Saint-André, 18th- to 19th-century mansions and notable art museums such as the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux. Public gardens line the curving river quays. The grand Place de la Bourse, centered on the Three Graces fountain, overlooks the Miroir d’Eau reflecting pool. A Bordeaux wine is any wine produced in the Bordeaux region of southwest France, centered on the city of Bordeaux and covering the whole area of the Gironde department, with a total vineyard area of over 120,000 hectares, making it the largest wine growing area in France. Average vintages produce over 700 million bottles of Bordeaux wine, ranging from large quantities of everyday table wine, to some of the most expensive and prestigious wines in the world. The vast majority of wine produced in Bordeaux is red (called “claret” in Britain), with sweet white wines (most notably Sauternes), dry whites, and (in much smaller quantities) rosé and sparkling wines (Crémant de Bordeaux) collectively making up the remainder. Bordeaux wine is made by more than 8,500 producers or châteaux. There are 54 appellations of Bordeaux wine.

About TOR

torTor Kenward, Owner
The fanatic. The fantasist. Rules by equal part instinct and equal part logic. A willful revisionist, meticulously blending, over and over until he gets it right.

“To me, one of the most enjoyable parts of the wine business is the challenge – when the heat’s on and there is pressure. You’re trying to work out the timing. All of those stressful things have become part of the enjoyment for me. It used to bother the hell out of me – I wanted to get everything perfect, perfect, perfect. And now it’s – you still want to do the same thing, but you realize you’re not totally in charge.”

2016 marks my 40th year as a Napa Valley vintner. The first 27 years were with Beringer Vineyards helping build a wine company known to collectors for its reserve and single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons and Chardonnays. I retired in 2001, and with my wife, Susan, started our dream: TOR Kenward Family Wines. Our plan was simple. Our wines would come from only the best blocks in great vineyard sites I knew and revered. All our wines are hand-made in every sense and in very small quantities.

My first three decades in the Napa Valley laid the foundation. I had extraordinary mentors all willing to openly share their knowledge and passion. Robert Mondavi, André Tchelistcheff, Warren Winiarski, Ed Sbragia, Maynard Amerine and many others encouraged me to learn and experiment. We tasted together and exchanged information. Beringer also sent me to travel and walk Europe’s most renowned vineyards, talk and taste with other winemakers, taste more, kick the dirt where world class wines are grown, and listen.

Our winemaking is driven by what I heard and learned making small experimental lots of wine at Beringer. Great vineyards deserve respect, and experience has taught me that in winemaking, less is more.

About my name: I am often asked, What does TOR mean? According to The American Heritage Dictionary, a “tor” is “a lofty pinnacle, a peak of bare rocky mountain.” The honored California poet, Robinson Jeffers, names his beautiful stone home in Carmel the TOR HOUSE. My dad was a writer and my mother a painter and respected (stage) thespian, which may explain this oddness to a certain degree.

Susan Kenward, Owner: Susan is all about keeping it simple and sensible without it looking as if you are trying too hard. Her path has taken her from the culinary to the fashion to the beauty worlds in a series of creative endeavors. She and a partner opened a Hampton’s specialty store called Loaves and Fishes, which won many kudos. Susan has written five cookbooks, receiving two James Beard Awards.

In 1985, Susan’s reputation as a food and lifestyle writer had earned her an assignment to interview a woman winemaker in Napa Valley who then introduced her to the man she would marry, Tor. In 1991 she started Flora Napa Valley and Olivina, a fragrance and body care line based on the scents and ingredients of the Napa Valley. “I easily fell in love with the Napa Valley, it is the perfect parade of the posh and the down-to-earth, farmers and sophisticates.”

TOR KENWARD  – an Insightful story about TOR Wines

Here are some moments in the life of Tor that shaped his lifelong passion of wine in Napa Valley – an inspiring story that he will showcase and share with our guests aboard ship this August while sailing the Garonne River. An interesting story to tell!

  1. Why do you believe you are the right wine host for this cruise? Share your credentials and passion for wine.
I’ve been a well-known winemaker/vintner for four decades in the Napa Valley.  I’ve been very fortunate to study winemaking and work with some of the great winemakers of Bordeaux over these years. Some worked with me as consultants in Napa and I often visited Bordeaux to taste thru the great Chateaux cellars.
  2. Tell us something special about yourself that would make someone unfamiliar with you want to travel with you on this river cruise?
I am a well-traveled cork dork with an excellent knowledge of winemaking and wine history.
  3. What was your “Aha Moment” when you fell in love with wine?
Visiting the Napa Valley in the mid-70s, falling in love with the passion these early wine pioneers shared during those formative years.
  4. What is one thing you are most looking forward to on your river cruise?
Re-visiting friends and Chateaux that helped shape my opinions of what makes a great wine.
  5. What is something fun/unique you wish to share—perhaps something nobody knows until now?
I had a successful jazz club before I became a vintner, and presented many well known artists.  Vietnam Vet before that.
  6. What is one of the most interesting places you have traveled to and why?
Love most wine producing parts of the world.  Have visited the vineyards/wineries of France, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Austria, and Croatia.
  7. If you were stranded on a desert island, and could only have one bottle of wine, what would it be and why?
1959 La Tache.  I was fortunate to have two cases and drank every bottle over many special occasions with friends.  It is the memories as much as the great wine.
