TOR Exclusive Post Cruise

Bordeaux Exclusive Post-Cruise Program with Tor & Susan Kenward
August 23-25, 2018, 2 nights – Savor Bordeaux and it’s Finest Vineyards (Limited to the first 20 guests)

August 23, 2018: Disembark AMADolce & Bordeaux Left Bank Exploration
After breakfast disembark your beautiful AMADolce ship with your luggage to meet our private guide to begin an exclusive tour of Bordeaux with Tor & Susan Kenward of TOR Wines.

11:00am: Our first stop is Chateau Margaux where we will enjoy a tasting and tour of the property; nicknamed the “Versailles of the Médoc” for the neo-palladian style château that graces the label of Margaux’s Grand Vin. Margaux isn’t just a refined, aristocratic, dwelling-house, but operates more like a self-sufficient hamlet with its own water source, gardens and exclusive cooperage for constructing oak barrels for wine aging. Visiting Margaux feels like a stroll through a bucolic landscape that harkens back to the French Renaissance. Drop down into the subterranean barrel aging facilities through a modern staircase, hidden behind a secret door camouflaged as a maintenance shed.

1:00pm: After wine tasting our tastebuds beckon us to Chateau D’Issan for another exquisite wine tasting this time with a delicious wine lunch. This relatively undiscovered gem is extraordinarily picturesque. What it lacks in worldwide fame it more than makes up for in history, superb quality of wine, cuisine and hospitality. In the 12th century, this property was a fiefdom with the name at that time of La Mothe-Cantenac. That wine is rumored to have been poured at the actual wedding of King Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine. The centerpiece of the property is a Louis XIV era Chateau (almost a petit Vaux-le-Vicomte) surrounded by a moat with fresh water that flows to the nearby Gironde.

Late afternoon we will arrive at Les Sources de Caudalie country hotel set amongst the vineyards on the Château Smith-Haut-Lafite Wine Estate. You will have some free time to enjoy Vinothérapie treatments at this Spa, well recognized for it grape based skincare products. Reservations available.

6:00pm: Gather for a walk about Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte Wine estate for tasting; if fortunate we will meet Daniel & Florence Cathiard, the dynamic owners of the estate and savor wines in their cellar. Tonight dining is on your own. Onsite is La Table du Lavoir a country-inn restaurant; ROUGE a wine bar and fine delicatessen, Le French Paradox bar; or off to Bordeaux a 20 minute drive! (B, L)

August 23-25, 2018: Les Sources de Caudalie, 5-star Hotel, 2 nights

August 24, 2018:  Bordeaux Right Bank Touring
Awake to the fresh scent of the Spa products that Caudalie is famous for. Then enjoy a hot-cooked breakfast at our hotel with steaming cafe aux laix, fresh croissants, farm fruit and local cheese.

10:00am: Meet our guide & driver to embark on a special day dedicated to Bordeaux’s vineyards to experience the “best of” Bordeaux! In 2017, 22 wine estates received ‘Best Of Wine Tourism’ awards thanks to their architecture, gardens, or the originality of the visits they offer. This unique day is an extraordinary opportunity to visit beautiful family-owned estates, meet their enthusiastic owners, and sample memorable wines of tradition alongside our favorite Napa Valley Winemaker!

11:00am: Our day of tastings begins at the most prominent Chateau on the Right Bank: Cheval Blanc, established in 1832 and celebrated as one of only four “Grand Cru Classe A,” the Right Bank’s equivalent commendation to the Left Bank’s First Growth classification. Since 2011, one of the most technologically advanced wineries ever built now lies behind the regal façade. A tranquil rooftop garden offers a splendid panorama overlooking many prized vineyards, including Chateau Petrus nearby.

12:45pm: Next we will dash into the charming walled village of St. Emilion, an enchanting enclave that traces its history back to prehistoric times and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Today St. Emilion offers breathtaking vistas, epicurean delights, incomparable charm and some of Europe’s most romantic history. Our tastebuds beckon us to Logis de Caden, a Michelin-Star Restaurant owned by the proprietors of Chateau Angelus (our next stop).

2:30pm: Our next stop, Chateau Angelus is a renowned Bordeaux favorite. When sampling their sumptuous red wines, one might deduce the name of this Chateau refers to “Angels” but it actually alludes to the Angelus bell, which is a traditional Catholic call to prayer to spread good-will to neighbors. James Bond fans will appreciate the connection as Angelus is the only wine to ever appear by name in that illustrious action hero’s films twice. After our tasting, we return to the hotel for spa and relaxation amidst the vines.

8:00pm: Our farewell dining experience is a food and wine paired 5-course delight at Chef Nicolas Masse’ Le Grande Vigne, 2-star Michelin restaurant. With the last glass of Sauterne we toast with our new friends the cherished lifelong memories shared with Tor & Susan in Bordeaux, before cozying up in our room next door for a well-deserved nights rest.   (B,L,D)

August 25, 2018:   BORDEAUX Airport Transfer
All too soon we bid farewell to the beautiful Bordeaux region. We have arranged a group transfer to the Bordeaux–Mérignac Airport (BOD); time will depend on guest flight times. Private transfers available upon request for additional fee. Please advise your complete air itinerary with reservation request. (B)   Or extend your stay in Bordeaux, Paris  & beyond.

About TOR

torTor Kenward, Owner
The fanatic. The fantasist. Rules by equal part instinct and equal part logic. A willful revisionist, meticulously blending, over and over until he gets it right.

“To me, one of the most enjoyable parts of the wine business is the challenge – when the heat’s on and there is pressure. You’re trying to work out the timing. All of those stressful things have become part of the enjoyment for me. It used to bother the hell out of me – I wanted to get everything perfect, perfect, perfect. And now it’s – you still want to do the same thing, but you realize you’re not totally in charge.”

2016 marks my 40th year as a Napa Valley vintner. The first 27 years were with Beringer Vineyards helping build a wine company known to collectors for its reserve and single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons and Chardonnays. I retired in 2001, and with my wife, Susan, started our dream: TOR Kenward Family Wines. Our plan was simple. Our wines would come from only the best blocks in great vineyard sites I knew and revered. All our wines are hand-made in every sense and in very small quantities.

My first three decades in the Napa Valley laid the foundation. I had extraordinary mentors all willing to openly share their knowledge and passion. Robert Mondavi, André Tchelistcheff, Warren Winiarski, Ed Sbragia, Maynard Amerine and many others encouraged me to learn and experiment. We tasted together and exchanged information. Beringer also sent me to travel and walk Europe’s most renowned vineyards, talk and taste with other winemakers, taste more, kick the dirt where world class wines are grown, and listen.

Our winemaking is driven by what I heard and learned making small experimental lots of wine at Beringer. Great vineyards deserve respect, and experience has taught me that in winemaking, less is more.

About my name: I am often asked, What does TOR mean? According to The American Heritage Dictionary, a “tor” is “a lofty pinnacle, a peak of bare rocky mountain.” The honored California poet, Robinson Jeffers, names his beautiful stone home in Carmel the TOR HOUSE. My dad was a writer and my mother a painter and respected (stage) thespian, which may explain this oddness to a certain degree.

Susan Kenward, Owner: Susan is all about keeping it simple and sensible without it looking as if you are trying too hard. Her path has taken her from the culinary to the fashion to the beauty worlds in a series of creative endeavors. She and a partner opened a Hampton’s specialty store called Loaves and Fishes, which won many kudos. Susan has written five cookbooks, receiving two James Beard Awards.

In 1985, Susan’s reputation as a food and lifestyle writer had earned her an assignment to interview a woman winemaker in Napa Valley who then introduced her to the man she would marry, Tor. In 1991 she started Flora Napa Valley and Olivina, a fragrance and body care line based on the scents and ingredients of the Napa Valley. “I easily fell in love with the Napa Valley, it is the perfect parade of the posh and the down-to-earth, farmers and sophisticates.”

TOR KENWARD  – an Insightful story about TOR Wines

Here are some moments in the life of Tor that shaped his lifelong passion of wine in Napa Valley – an inspiring story that he will showcase and share with our guests aboard ship this August while sailing the Garonne River. An interesting story to tell!

  1. Why do you believe you are the right wine host for this cruise? Share your credentials and passion for wine.
I’ve been a well-known winemaker/vintner for four decades in the Napa Valley.  I’ve been very fortunate to study winemaking and work with some of the great winemakers of Bordeaux over these years. Some worked with me as consultants in Napa and I often visited Bordeaux to taste thru the great Chateaux cellars.
  2. Tell us something special about yourself that would make someone unfamiliar with you want to travel with you on this river cruise?
I am a well-traveled cork dork with an excellent knowledge of winemaking and wine history.
  3. What was your “Aha Moment” when you fell in love with wine?
Visiting the Napa Valley in the mid-70s, falling in love with the passion these early wine pioneers shared during those formative years.
  4. What is one thing you are most looking forward to on your river cruise?
Re-visiting friends and Chateaux that helped shape my opinions of what makes a great wine.
  5. What is something fun/unique you wish to share—perhaps something nobody knows until now?
I had a successful jazz club before I became a vintner, and presented many well known artists.  Vietnam Vet before that.
  6. What is one of the most interesting places you have traveled to and why?
Love most wine producing parts of the world.  Have visited the vineyards/wineries of France, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Austria, and Croatia.
  7. If you were stranded on a desert island, and could only have one bottle of wine, what would it be and why?
1959 La Tache.  I was fortunate to have two cases and drank every bottle over many special occasions with friends.  It is the memories as much as the great wine.
