SS200924007 - Barcelona to CivitavecchiaThe infinite variety of street life, the nooks and crannies of the medieval Barri Gòtic, the ceramic tile and stained glass of Art Nouveau facades, the art and music, the throb of street life, the food (ah, the food!)—one way or another, Barcelona will find a way to get your full attention. The capital of Catalonia is a banquet for the senses, with its beguiling mix of ancient and modern architecture, tempting cafés and markets, and sun-drenched Mediterranean beaches. A stroll along La Rambla and through waterfront Barceloneta, as well as a tour of Gaudí’s majestic Sagrada Famíliaand his other unique creations, are part of a visit to Spain’s second-largest city. Modern art museums and chic shops call for attention, too. Barcelona’s vibe stays lively well into the night, when you can linger over regional wine and cuisine at buzzing tapas bars.

The fishing village of Sète serves as gateway to Montpellier, in the North. Other noteworthy destinations in this area include Carcassone, Aigues Mortes, the Abbaye de Fontfroide, and Pezenas. For a look at the real fisherman’s life, however, stay right where you are. Sète is the Mediterranean’s biggest fishing port. Canals winding through town make it fun to stroll around, and there are a number of good walking paths leading to the beach (about 30 minutes to the west). Although it’s small and unspectacular, Plage de la Corniche has calm, pristine waters that are perfect for swimming. For a panoramic view of the area, climb Mont St-Clair or Les Pierres Blanches and pick a beach to settle down on.

Since being designated a European Capital of Culture for 2013, with an estimated €660 million of funding in the bargain, Marseille has been in the throes of an extraordinary transformation, with no fewer than five major new arts centers, a beautifully refurbished port, revitalized neighborhoods, and a slew of new shops and restaurants. The second-largest city in France, Marseille is one of Europe’s most vibrant destinations. Feisty and fond of broad gestures, it is also as complicated and as cosmopolitan now as it was when a band of Phoenician Greeks first sailed into the harbor that is today’s Vieux Port in 600 BC.

There are sandy beaches, rare enough on the Riviera, and old-fashioned squares with plane trees and pétanque players, but these are a dime a dozen throughout Provence. So what made St-Tropez an internationally known locale? Two words: Brigitte Bardot. When this pulpeuse (voluptuous) teenager showed up in St-Tropez on the arm of Roger Vadim in 1956 to film And God Created Woman, the heads of the world snapped around.

The colorful facades and pedestrians-only calata (promenade) make Portovenere the quintessential Ligurian seaside village. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, its harbor is lined with tall, thin “terratetto” houses that date from as far back as the 11th century and are connected in a wall-like formation to protect against attacks by the Pisans and local pirates. Its tiny, carruggi (alley-like passageways) lead to an array of charming shops, homes, and gardens and eventually to the village’s impressive Castle Doria high on the olive tree covered hill. To the west standing guard over the Mediterranean is the picturesque medieval Chiesa di San Pietro, once the site of a temple to Venus (Venere in Italian), from which Portovenere gets its name. Nearby, in a rocky area leading to the sea, is Byron’s Cave, a favorite spot that the poet loved to swim out into the sea from.

Livorno, Tuscany has an interesting history. In the early Middle Ages it alternately belonged to Pisa and Genoa. In 1421 Florence, seeking access to the sea, bought it. Cosimo I (1519–74) started construction of the harbor in 1571, putting Livorno on the map. After Ferdinando I de’ Medici (1549–1609) proclaimed Livorno a free city, it became a haven for people suffering from religious persecution; Roman Catholics from England and Jews and Moors from Spain and Portugal, among others, settled here. The Quattro Mori (Four Moors), also known as the Monument to Ferdinando I, commemorates this. (The statue of Ferdinando I dates from 1595, the bronze Moors by Pietro Tacca from the 1620s.) In the following centuries, and particularly in the 18th, Livorno boomed as a port. Its prominence continued up to World War II, when it was heavily bombed. MillenniuM Travel launches its WIne visits to Bolgheri from this port.

All roads lead to Rome, and with good reason – this city is one of the world’s most thrilling, offering unmatched history along every street. An evocative, inspiring and utterly artistic capital of unrivalled cultural impact, Rome is a city of back-to-back landmarks, which will take you on an exhilarating journey through the ages. This may be one of the world’s oldest cities, but it’s well and truly lived in. The ruins are punctuated with murmuring cafes, and the outdoor seating of restaurants sprawls out across piazzas, enticing you to sample tangles of creamy pasta and crispy pizzas. Rome’s incredible Roman Forum is littered with the ruins of its ancient administrations, which have stood firm for 2,000 years, since the times when the area was the centre of the Western world. Few sites are more simultaneously beautiful and haunting than that of the storied Colosseum, which looms deep into Rome’s rich blue sky.

Lauren Ackerman

Lauren Ackerman, Proprietor of Ackerman Family Vineyards

Former tech entrepreneur, vintner and philanthropist Lauren Ackerman founded Ackerman Family Vineyards in 1994 with her husband after purchasing the small “Stonehaven” property in Napa’s Coombsville district. The following year, they produced their first wine and, in 2003, they released their first commercial wine, a Cabernet Sauvignon from the Ackerman Family estate. They became the first certified organic vineyard in Coombsville in 2009. Today, Ackerman Family Vineyards produces an estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignon, Le Chatelaine, a Bordeaux-style blend, Alavigna Tosca, a Cabernet Sangiovese blend and a newly released Sauvignon Blanc from Napa Valley.

Ackerman Family Vineyards

Introduction to Ackerman Family Vineyards

Ackerman Family Vineyards is a boutique artisan producer of premium Cabernet Sauvignon wines within the newer AVA of Coombsville, located in the southeastern section of Napa Valley. Known for its cooler climates, rich, volcanic soils and hilly terrain, the Coombsville section of Napa has long produced wines (since 1930’s) with deep berry flavors, typically lower alcohols and the ability to have long staying power in the bottle when cellared.

AFV has been producing Cabernet Sauvignon and Cab Blend wines since it first purchased the 16 acre estate containing 11 acres under vine, named Stonehaven Vineyard, in 1994.  The Ackerman’s spent the first twelve years refining, improving and carefully managing the vines to produce a wine that best represented the unique AVA and capturing a place in time.  Opening up the trellis system to provide more sunlight to the clusters, planting legumes and poppies for soil nutrition, providing hawk boxes for rodent control and not using pesticides or fertilizers over time garnered us the title of becoming the first certified organic vineyard (CCOF) in the Coombsville area. These farming practices translate into a wine with robust berry, chocolate, leather, and a hint of spice flavors. Because of the usual long “hang time” before harvest (typically harvested between the end of September and the end of October), the grapes have a chance to mature slowly, lower alcohol levels (historically between 13.2 and 14.5%) and produce elegant tannin structures.

In 2016,  AFV opened their first tasting salon in downtown Napa within a property containing a fully restored 1888 Queen Anne Victorian, now known as The Ackerman Heritage House and the adjoining 1910 Carriage House, now known as The Aviary. Visitors to this property step back in time to an era when Napa was just beginning its journey in becoming a world-renowned wine appellation. We are proud to have been in several Michelin Star Restaurants such as French Laundry and Single Thread. AFV has been recognized by Food And Wine Magazine as one of the top eight unique hospitality experiences within the Napa Valley ( “Best Appointment Only Tasting Experiences in Sonoma and Napa” and also highlighted in Wine Enthusiast magazine as one of Napa’s Top Cabernet Sauvignons.
