Civitavecchia was founded by Emperor Trajan in the 2nd century. Today this port is noted for its fine seafood and attractive monuments. Located 90 minutes away is the Eternal City of Rome. Steeped in 2,500 years of history, Rome was for many centuries the center of Western civilization. It was both the focal point of the Roman Empire and of Christendom. Landmarks such as the Colosseum, Forum, Pantheon, Vatican, Sistine Chapel and Spanish Steps are reminders of the legacy of its rich past.

Sorrento may have become a jumping-off point for visitors to Pompeii, Capri, and Amalfi, but you can find countless reasons to love it for itself. The Sorrentine people are fair-minded and hardworking, bubbling with life and warmth. The tuff cliff on which the town rests is spread over the bay, absorbing sunlight, while orange and lemon trees waft their perfume in spring. Winding along a cliff above a small beach and two harbors, the town is split in two by a narrow ravine formed by a former mountain stream.

Positioned in the Mediterranean Sea between France and Italy, the island of Corsica seems to offer visitors a wonderful taste of both worlds. Propriano, on the southwest of the island, proves an ideal place to savor a slice of mixed-ingredient culture, with its Church of Notre Dame de la Misericorde dominating its small city center and harbor hosting vessels ranging from modest fishing boats to luxurious yachts. Traditional houses outfitted with shops and taverns line the picturesque seaside.

Palma de Mallorca, rich in monuments of many ages, was founded by the Romans more than 2,000 years ago. A magnificent rose-colored Gothic cathedral dominates the palm-fringed waterfront of its urban center. Mallorca, known as the “Island of Tranquility,” is the largest and most developed of the Balearic group. Steep mountains, serene valleys and wide plains form its varied landscape. Visit the island’s quaint villages and the monastery where George Sand and Frederic Chopin spent a winter.

There are few cities able to harmoniously combine the remnants of its farthest past, dating to the year 138 BC, with the most innovative and avant-garde buildings from the new millennium. Sunbathe in one of Spain’s most exhilarating cities. Valencia is vibrant town with dynamic nightlife, outdoor activities and sports, and its mezcla of architectural wonders. In Old Town, see everything from a 15th-century palaces, to recent wonders of modern art.

Barcelona’s seaside beauty, sprawling beaches, eclectic architecture, world-class tapas and Tempranillo are all reasons to fall in love with the city of Gaudí. Indeed, the treasures here are many and diverse, captivating travelers and experts alike. In fact, nine important sites in the city, seven designed by the famed architect himself, have earned the acclaim of UNESCO.

Situated on the French Riviera between St. Tropez and Toulon, the charming village of Le Lavandou is renowned for its palm-fringed, sandy beaches, yacht-spangled harbor and welcoming seaside cafés, restaurants, bars and shops. It’s shaded alleys, attractive fountains and bench-lined promenades offer the perfect setting for leisurely strolls and the possibility of spotting locals playing in a friendly game of pétanque, Provence’s most popular pastime.

Monte Carlo, Monaco is an ancient principality steeped in rich and colorful history. Its proud monarchy is presided over by Prince Albert, who assumed the throne after his famed father Prince Rainier died in 2005.  Today when gazing on its modern skyline, it is hard to imagine that Monaco endured a turbulent past. Once a Greek settlement conquered by the Romans, it was bought from the Genoese in 1309 by the Grimaldis, who still rule as the world’s oldest monarchy. Monaco covers less than one square mile and is known primarily for its Grand Casino.

Todd Newman

Todd Newman, Dakota Shy’s Founder

Dakota Shy’s story is one of humble beginnings. A journey that differs from most of the capital intensive wine brands in the Napa Valley. As Todd says, “We put the boots on, laced them up, and put the work in.” Passion, hard-work and tenacity are at the core of his foundation.

Born in North Dakota, Todd’s journey to the Napa Valley started in 2003 when his friend Dennis Kelley arranged a job for him at the famed Michelin starred Martini House restaurant in St. Helena. Under the guidance of this Michelin-starred restaurant, he learned the wine business through the lens of hospitality & service. In 2005, Tom Garrett hired him to work in the cellar at Revana Family Vineyard under the direction of world-famous winemaker Heidi Peterson Barrett. Over time, Todd transitioned from assisting with winemaking in the cellar to directing Revana’s national sales program.

In 2008, Todd created Dakota Shy using the tips he had accumulated and knowledge he had logged through his early years in Napa.

Dakota Shy

Dakota Shy grew out of the passion that friends and colleagues, Todd Newman and Tom Garrett, have for the wines, history and vineyards of Napa Valley. Their goal is to craft wines of substance and place that rival the best of what Napa Valley has to offer; from the pinnacle of quality and luxury to world-class Cabernet Sauvignon that can proudly be placed on the table and enjoyed every week.

After years of working together at Revana Family Vineyard, under the tutelage of Napa Valley winemaking legends Heidi Barrett and Thomas Brown, and vineyard manager Jim Barbour, these two friends set out with a determination to create a world-class estate of their own.

They began by sourcing Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from a range of great vineyards throughout Napa Valley. These vineyards represent the arch of grape growing history in the valley from old, trusted sources to new, highly regarded plantings. Produced in limited quantities, their handcrafted Cabernets reflect the highest expression of the vintage.
