Although Hong Kong has returned to its original Chinese roots, it still remains a cosmopolitan city with influences, languages and accents from around the world. Here East meets West and the result is electric. Soaring skyscrapers rise from the hills and harbor, blending geography and nature with commercial concrete, steel and pulsating neon in a way that brings traditional Chinese culture and Western-style commerce into perfect harmony.

Bustling and modern Hualien sits on the rugged east coast of Taiwan, an island laden with mountainous nature reserves bursting with enchanting scenery. Just to the city’s north is Taroko National Park, an absolute jewel of the region and home to Taroko Gorge, a sheer-walled, 12-mile-long river canyon accessed by a scenic winding highway. Eternal Spring Shrine, a picturesque temple complex built over a cascading waterfall, clings to the verdant cliffs of this must-see park’s interior.

Discover a slice of paradise that merges East Asian culture with tropical bliss, an intoxicating blend of beach and reef relaxation and Shinto-shrine enlightenment. Ishigaki is ideal for snorkeling, hiking, beachcombing and kayaking. Kabira Bay is an idyllic spot, part of the Iriomote-Ishigaki National Park, and popular for diving. Inland, dense palm forests, jungle-clad mountains and rivers lined with mangrove are a photographer’s and nature lover’s delight.

The seas surrounding these islands, located about 20 miles from Okinawa, are a window to the wonders below, astoundingly transparent and reflecting nearly neon hues in the sunlight. Beneath these waters is a snorkeler’s playground, with sea turtles swimming along the coral reefs among the hundreds of endemic species here. Watch for migrating humpback whales who also favor the warm waters among the islands for their annual breeding grounds.

Located where the Yangtze River meets the Pacific, Shanghai’s enviable position is the source of its existence, shaping it into what it is today – a modern metropolis of dizzying scale and ancient influence. Once a tiny fishing village, Shanghai is now the center of China’s economic resurgence with a spacious waterfront promenade and flotilla of sampans edging the Huangpu River.

During WWII, the original target of the “Fat Man” atomic bomb was not Nagasaki, but Kokura, one of five small cities that merged to create Kitakyushu in 1963. Thanks to thick cloud cover, the city was spared. Today, you can stroll a winding promenade at Moji Port to discover some of Kitakyushu’s historic buildings, shops, restaurants, and museums. Kokura Castle, an impressive symbol of the city, and the beautiful Kawachi Wisteria Garden are among the area’s most popular attractions.

This ethereal island’s fame – and name – comes from the iconic 1400-year-old floating Itsukushima Shrine that illustrates the spiritual sanctity of Miyajima (the island’s popular name). This “island of gods” is rich with adventures, including a challenging climb up Mount Misen rewarded with sweeping views and cultural highlights at the summit, biking through the island’s picturesque pathways and possible Zodiac landings.

This town is all about innovation, home to several engineering powerhouses and shipbuilding facilities. The breathtaking scenery and outdoor lifestyle of Tamano in no way conveys an industrial atmosphere, with beaches perfect for swimming or beach volleyball, and public displays of contemporary art downtown. Lovely Miyama Park boasts an English garden and numerous walking and biking paths, while Ojigadake Bluffs reward hikers with sea views.

As it has been for centuries, Osaka remains a city of commerce, one of the original Japanese towns at the core of a developing society that grew around trade with China. Although the nature of the city hasn’t changed, it is presently undergoing an architectural revolution with a dazzling display of gleaming skyscrapers. Its prime geography makes it an excellent gateway to famed locales – including the sacred site of Kyoto and the majestic tranquility of Nara.

From the timeless beauty of the Meiji Shrine to the glittering Ginza District and impressive Tokyo Tower, Tokyo is a complex blend of East and West where houses of wood and paper stand beside soaring steel skyscrapers while kimono-clad women stroll along trendy teenagers. Here in this city of more than 11 million people, the timeless Imperial Palace bears testament to Japan’s enduring traditions, existing in a verdant parkland of isolation.

Eileen Crane

eileenEileen, Domaine Carneros’ founding winemaker and president is equally at home in the world of food and fine dining. Raised with a keen appreciation for fine wines and haute cuisine, Eileen originally prepared for a culinary career, earning a master’s degree in nutrition followed by professional training at the prestigious Culinary Institute of America.

After two years of teaching nutrition at the University of Connecticut, Eileen made the decision to turn her passion for wine into a profession, headed west, and enrolled in the U.C. Davis Enology and Viticulture program. Upon completion of her studies, she was hired by Domaine Chandon, where she progressed to the position of assistant winemaker.

The next move for the young winemaker involved a task that most lifelong veterans of the industry never undertake–building a winery. Hired as winemaker and vice president of Gloria Ferrer Champagne Caves, she was entrusted with the dual responsibilities of overseeing the design and construction of the facility in addition to developing the line of sparkling wines.

It turned out to be an experience that served her well. Selected personally by Claude Taittinger for the position of President/Winemaker of Domaine Carneros, dedicated to producing world-class sparkling wines made in the French tradition from famed Carneros region grapes, Eileen oversaw the planning and development of the beautiful Carneros landmark chateau, vineyards and winemaking facility. In 2003, Eileen directed the planning and construction of Domaine Carneros’ second winemaking facility, dedicated exclusively to the production of Pinot Noir wines.

It is understandable that Taittinger and Eileen Crane have joined forces as they share a common winemaking style. The elegant, delicate, yet intense style for which Taittinger is well respected is what Eileen strives for. No less surprising is the fact that the joint venture is located in Carneros. Carneros and Eileen Crane go together, as do Carneros and sparkling wine.

Carneros is famous for production of chardonnay and pinot noir grapes, two key ingredients of a premium sparkling wine. An area blessed with a long, cool growing season, Carneros produces grapes which are particularly fine for sparkling wine as they have greater fruit maturity and produce wines with superb balance and a long finish.

In 1992 Domaine Carneros started producing small quantities of fine Estate Pinot Noir. The wines are appreciated for their great depth, balance and long silky finish. In 2003, Domaine Carneros completed a dedicated Pinot Noir Facility that incorporated the largest solar collection system on any winery in the world.

Eileen Crane is one of a handful of women who are now in the forefront of the wine industry in California. Recently recognized as one of the 75 Most Influential Women in Business by the San Francisco Business Times, Eileen is actively involved in numerous wine and civic organizations and is a past president of both the Carneros Quality Alliance and the California Classic Methods/Classic Varieties Society (CM/CV) and currently Chairs the Board of Napa Valley Hospice.
