For centuries, Dover has been a symbol of England’s royal fortitude. The port’s legendary White Cliffs have long been a welcomed landmark for seafaring travelers. The solid Dover Castle has faced invasions by Roman, French and even English troops. London’s legendary sights, including Westminster Abbey, Big Ben, Parliament Square, Whitehall and the fashionable West End, lie just 80 miles from historic Dover.

Occupying a strategic position between La Hague and Vale de Saire, Cherbourg has long been a territory disputed between the English and the French. And despite the two countries’ unity to defend the Continent against the Nazis, the port fell to German forces in 1940. Rebuilt and revitalized, Cherbourg today is a cultural treasure, enjoyed for its open-air markets, sparkling waterfront, fine museums and interesting boutiques.

Plymouth boasts as rich maritime heritage, both as a Royal Navy port and a busy fishing marina. Notable sights include the Mayflower Steps where the Pilgrim Fathers set sail for the New World in 1620, as well as the National Marine Aquarium. With its cobbled streets and restaurants overlooking Sutton Harbour, the historic Barbican district is now an energetic waterside neighborhood. Visit the nearby Mount Edgcumbe and Saltram houses for a glimpse of English gardens and Georgian interiors.

Once considered a major port for Great Britain, Dún Laoghaire (or Dunleary), has successfully maintained its quaint country charm despite the recent tourism boom. Now a popular cruise stop in Ireland, conveniently located just outside of Dublin, the city still boasts an intimate country feel with its offering of local retail shops, bistros and a scenic pier promenade.

Liverpool grew to greatness in the 18th century, as the riches of the Americas and the West Indies flowed through its docks and marketplaces. (At one point it even had more dock space than London.) More recently, the town’s fame grew along with its most famous sons: the Beatles. Visit Town Hall, the Walker Art Gallery, and the delights of the restored Albert Dock, with its classy shops and maritime museum.

A Viking kingdom more than a thousand years ago, Douglas is today the capital of the Isle of Man. The shopping high street, filled with some of Europe’s biggest retailers as well as local shops, leads to the magnificent sea front lined with restaurants, theaters and museums. The Douglas Horse Trams also run along the harbor, and nighttime illuminations along the shore light up landmarks such as the stately Tower of Refuge, creating an unforgettable after-dark vista.

With the decades-long “Troubles” settling into the past, Belfast today boasts a hip, art-filled, foodie-scene, a glittering waterfront and welcoming personality. Ornate Victorian homes and grand Edwardian civic buildings line streets, while quaint lanes are dotted with pubs and boutiques dressed with overflowing window boxes and brightly painted doors. Consider a quick trip over the lough, or small bay, to Carrickfergus Castle, the best-preserved Norman castle in Ireland.

Magnificent mountain vistas welcome you to Greenock, gateway to the bonnie banks of Loch Lomand and Scotland’s largest city, Glasgow. Known for its shipbuilding history, Glasgow today is hip and vibrant with the accolades to prove it – a 1990 European Culture Capital; a 1999 UK City of Architecture & Design, and 2014 host to the Commonwealth Games. Discover the art scene in the Merchant City district, explore the revered Kelvingrove Art Gallery and the Zaha Hadid-designed Riverside Museum.

Remote and rugged, the Isle of Skye possesses a certain magic. Arrive in the pretty little harbor lined by colorful buildings and either head straight out into the wild and wooly surroundings—by boat, foot or even pony—or stay in the snug town for an immersion in old-time charm. The pier, designed by renowned Scottish architect Thomas Telford, is one attraction. Another is the award-winning Àros Centre, which presents theater productions, concerts and films.

Delightful Stornoway is the capital of the Western Isles with a population of only 8,000. Beautifully situated on the seafront, overlooking a magnificent harbor, Stornoway is considered by many to be in one of the most picturesque regions in Scotland. The town’s friendly inhabitants are revered for their seafaring traditions and they enjoy a level of self-sufficiency that is normally only seen in larger towns on the mainland.

Isolated in a northern landscape of icy tranquility, Iceland is a land of volcanoes, hot springs, mountains, glaciers and northern lights. As the capital of Iceland, Reykjavík reflects this natural diversity with ancient maritime history as well as a thriving modern energy and sophistication.

Monty & Sara Preiser

Monty & Sara Preiser, Founding Vintners

Monty Preiser earned his law degree in 1976 and before he semi-retired to spend his time in the wine industry he litigated major cases in about 20 states involving the safety of vaccines, tools, and medical practices. Sara Preiser graduated in 1973 with a degree in drama, and then became a spokesperson for DuPont and women’s fashion when Lycra was invented.

They met on a blind date in New York in 1977, and were married in 1978. They lived in West Virginia for 15 years before moving to Florida in 1992. After they became empty-nesters, they decided to write about food and wine as a joint hobby, which not surprisingly led them to the Napa Valley. Soon they were well recognized wine writers and founders of the most complete guide to Napa wineries and restaurants. From there it was a short step to making wine, which they first did in 2006. In 2009 the couple took partners and Shadowbox Cellars was born.

Shadowbox Cellars

About Shadowbox Cellars

When Shadowbox Cellars was founded in 2009, two of its partners, Monty and Sara Preiser, were well recognized wine writers. Because of their knowledge of winemakers and vineyards in Napa and Sonoma, the decision was made by all the partners to engage individual winemakers who had made strong impressions revolving around certain varietals. Thus, at its inception the company employed four winemakers to craft four varietals, each in their own particular style. It was a noble experiment. As the Shadowbox owners gained education and experience in their new field of endeavor, the decision was made to focus on a singular style of wine – their own.

Each year has seen progress in not only the quality of the wines, but the production numbers, which have expanded from 200 cases in 2009 to now just over 800 cases of the 2016 vintage.

Nonetheless, the focus and ultimate profile of each wine has remained the same — acid driven, food friendly wines, sourced from small vineyards that produce superior fruit.  The Preisers and the Holzes all firmly agree that without the perfect vineyard, the beginning point of each grape, the final product will fall short of expectation.

In 2018, Shadowbox has expanded its reach to include vineyards from areas in California other than Napa and Sonoma. Up and coming wine growing areas in Paso Robles and the Sierra Foothills now provide some fruit, and the winery is always on the lookout for something special.

As production and popularity have grown, the summer of 2018 witnessed Shadowbox’s proud opening of their very own tasting room in the heart of downtown Napa and their promotion of their son Justin Preiser to wine maker. Here visitors can enjoy an intimate, sit-down experience, while sipping and learning about the wines directly from the vintners or winemaker.
